Who Says Test Cricket is Dead ?

After watching the first test match between India and Australia I couldn't stop repeatedly asking this question. Three four years ago when twenty20 cricket started we all thought twenty20 cricket would put the final nail of the coffin of the test cricket. Everybody was talking about this exciting new format and none bothered about the good old lazy style of cricket (except hard core test cricket fans). But after few years of cricket we all bored with over kill twenty20 cricket. And almost all twenty20 tournament are too commercialized we don't really feel that we are watching a game. Most games are, some cricket between advertisements. The common cricket lovers feel that this is for businessmen and few twenty20 specialists not for the masses.

The last test match between India and Australia was the silver line in the dark cloud. It proved that test cricket can still produce excitement while delivering quality cricket. And today is the forth day of the second test match between the same team and it looks like heading to the same kind of exciting finish. But one notable thing here is the way the pitch reacts. If you want to have good cricket you have to produce good wickets that support both batsmen and bowlers not the dead pitches like we saw in India Sri Lanka test series.

Test Championship, Shorter World Cup, Pros & Cons of The Changes

ICC's chief executive committee recently took some policy decisions that can make many genuine cricket lovers happy. The most important proposal out of all of them is, proposed 'Test Championship'. They have proposed a league that runs for 4 years period withing FTP (Future Tour Program) and they play off between top four teams after every 4 year period. That's a very good move. It's not only brings much needed attention to the traditional format of the game, but also solve the problem of unbalanced FTP in many countries. In last few years, we have seen there were too much cricket for some countries while some other countries were empty handed. And also some countries played with each other too much (India v Sri Lanka ?), even spectators lost their interest. So this proposal will bring some positive changes though it might not solve all the problems.
And also they have proposed a new ODI league that mirrors the existing team ranking. It's totally separated from the world cup and world cup will be held in every three years as usual. And also they have proposed to reduce number of teams and matches in the world cup. You might welcome this move if you remember the painfully long world cup in West Indies. And also proposed to increase the number of teams in next twenty20 world cup to 16, as emerging cricketing nations have more interest and success in this format. Overall all these proposals looks good and most of them were requested for long time by the players and the spectators.
But some already started crying foul and they have a point to make. Specially the proposal to reduce teams in 50 over world cup is criticized by the associated member countries as it's effectively cut their chances to be in thir world cup.  Cricket boards of  Kenya, Canada and Ireland are leading the criticism and they argue that it will make anyone other than ten full member countries to make in to the world cup. Australian Cricketers' Association saying that too many test can cause player over burn. While welcoming the move for test championship, they questioned it's possibility withing already packed schedule.
For me these proposals are one of the best decisions they took in recent history of ICC and hope they will implement them soon while considering the possible changes that can minimize the criticism against them.

Why IPL Teams Fail in Champions League T20 ?

This is the second Champions League Twenty20 tournament (officially it should be third as the first edition was canceled due to Mumbai attack) and so far the performance of Indian Premier League teams are very disappointing in both tournaments. IPL teams enjoy elusive benefits in Champions League as it's originated by BCCI. They have first right to keep any player in their squad even another team that contracted these players is also qualified for the tournament. Twenty20 specialists like, Cameron White, Ross Taylor, Kevin Pollard all play for IPL teams because of that rule. Cameron White who is the regular captain of Victoria team has to play against his own team due to this rule. And IPL is the only domestic league that sends three teams to the Champions League. South Africa and Australia send two each (England also qualified to send two teams, though they decided not to) and all other countries send one each.

With these all favorable rules, IPL teams should dominate Champions League. But the reality is different. In last years edition none of the IPL teams made in to the knock out stage. Two Australian teams, a South African team and a West Indies team were in the semi finals. Even though only seven matches played so far in this years tournament, one of the IPL team Mumbai Indians is in the verge of elimination. They were defeated by runners up of Australian domestic league and South African domestic league. Chennai Super Kings and Bangalore Royal Challengers did well so far, but it's too early to make predictions. But with their performance, IPL teams can still keep some hope this year unlike last year.

Champions League T20 So Far... Home Sweet Home...

We have just passed the third day of the Champions League T20 and the fifth game, but it was clear that South African teams and South African players in the other teams are doing great in their home soil. South African domestic Twenty20 runner up, Highveld Lions created a shock in the very first game by beating star studded Mumbai Indians team. Then Their T20 Champions, Warriors beat Sri Lanka's Wayamba Eleven team which has many international names including veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardena. Lions lost their second game against South Australia, but it was a close game.
Then South African all rounder Albie Morkel gave good contribution for his team to beat New Zealand's Central District team. But so fat the best result from a South African player came in yesterday's game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Guyana. Jacques Kallis took three wickets for sixteen and then he scored unbeaten forty three runs in thirty two balls. South African fast bowler Dale Steyn is also did reasonably well though not exceptional. With All these it seems this time Champions League Twenty20 is a good one for the home teams and players so far.

Less Cricket But Drama Off The Field

Most of the cricketers around the world are having much needed break as very busy period ahead. But the media is full of cricket news, most of them from outside the field. Things such as pot-fixing, match-fixing, alleged sexual offenses, drunk driving and messing with social media, are making headlines these days.
Among all, alleged spot-fixing claims against three Pakistan players is the biggest scandal in cricket for many years. That's getting more and more attention as the tabloid paper that broke out the news is adding fuel to it day by day with new claims. While some are taking the swords against the players, some people are calling this is conspiracy. Are they true? Or they are some conspiracy against Pakistan players ? Only the people who involve in that knows the truth. Best thing for the cricket at the moment is, everybody has patient till the investigation finish and they give maximum possible punishment for whoever found guilty. Anyway, one thing is clear with this all. The system that in place to prevent these, is not effective. While punish the players who involve this, ICC should look what are the shortcomings from their side.
Though it's not get much attention internationally, Sri Lankan cricket circle also seems to be having small storm. Some websites are claiming that one of their star batsman, has committed sexual offense in Zimbabwe and is banned entering there. But those claims were not verified and Sri Lankan cricket denied these claims in press release. And two English players were fined last week for criticizing the management (mostly selectors) using social media network, twitter. Not long ago English spinner Graeme Swann's famous cat story made headlines. With all these last few weeks we had lost of drama outside the field. Let's hope we have some positive news from the coming days as Champions Leagues t20 and many bilateral series are starting.
